Three Really Important Questions to Ask a Personal Injury Attorney

It is very important to thoroughly research and to be very choosy when selecting which attorney you hire for your personal injury case. Massachusetts has roughly 50,000 practicing attorneys, and many of them handle personal injury cases. Here are some questions to ask any attorney you are considering hiring for your personal injury case.

  1. Do you only handle personal injury cases?
It is important to ask this question so you can determine the lawyer’s level of experience with not only personal injury cases but with your case in particular. Some lawyers handle only personal injury cases, while others may only dabble. Generally, a lawyer who concentrates in one area of law will be more focused on that area of law than a general practitioner who handles multiple areas of law.
  2. Do you file lawsuits for your clients?
Some lawyers avoid lawsuits because they don’t want to go to court. Others enjoy going to court and fighting for their clients in front of judges and juries. If it seems the attorney is gun shy about going to court, that may be a sign he’s not willing to truly roll up his sleeves and go to bat for you. But if hiring a litigator is not important to you, then the answer to this question becomes less important.
  3. Who would be handling my case?
Each lawyer has a different office setup. At some law offices, a lawyer will rarely, if ever, touch a file until the end of the case when it’s time to settle the case. In these types of law offices, it will be a legal assistant or paralegal that will be doing the bulk of the work. At other law offices, the lawyer stays very connected to the case and is involved in each step. Be sure to ask an attorney how her office is set up in this respect. Find out who will actually be working on your case. The right lawyer generally is the one who is willing to go to bat for you.
