WEST SPRINGFIELD, MA – One person went to the hospital, and another person was arrested Monday night following a two-vehicle collision in central Hampden County, reports WWLP 22.
The accident happened shortly after 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of Memorial Avenue and Union Street near Century Center in West Springfield. This is about 90 miles southwest of Boston.
Police say that the driver of a Subaru Legacy was speeding when he failed to stop at a red light and struck a Mazda sedan.
Medics transported the driver of the Mazda to a Springfield hospital with serious injuries.
Authorities arrested the driver of the Subaru, since identified as 34-year-old Wesley Mendez, on suspicion of driving while under the influence of alcohol. Mendez will also face charges for running a red light, negligence, and speeding.
Motorists likely faced lengthy delays Monday evening in the area of the wreck while emergency teams assisted the injured victim and worked to clear the scene.
A full investigation is underway.
