Hair Straightener Claims and Lawsuits
What Are Hair Straighteners?
Hair straighteners, often called hair relaxers, are lotions or cream chemical applications then when applied to the hair make hair smoother. They change the chemical composition of the hair follicle which makes hair easier to manage and style. These products are used by women, and particularly African American women. These products have been manufactured and sold for over 100 years to millions and millions of women.
Why Are Hair Straighteners Dangerous?
In October, 2022 a study was released by the National Institute of Health (NIH) which discovered that hair straighteners can cause uterine cancer in women. This was a very comprehensive, 11-year study that looked at roughly 30,000 women ages 35-74 which revealed that those who use hair relaxers are twice as likely to develop uterine cancer. That science showed that the chemicals found in hair relaxers can alter hormones in women, thus causing cancer. African American women in particular are more at risk because they frequently use the product often, and many times at a very young age.
